China’s Premier Wen Jiaboin Davos
Premier Wen Jiabao of China will attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting and will address the participants in a special session on the first day of the Meeting. The World Economic Forum has confirmed record attendance for the Meeting, with over 40 heads of state and government joining 1,200 business leaders. Participants from over 90 countries will also include experts, leaders from non-governmental organizations and trade unions, and the Young Global Leaders.
Unrivalled Platform for Leaders
Improving the state of the world requires all stakeholders to collaborate in a proactive, integrated and systematic manner to address global challenges. For this purpose, and for nearly four decades, the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting has provided an unrivalled platform for leaders from all walks of life to shape the global agenda and to catalyse solutions at the start of each year.
The State of the World
The international landscape will be radically altered as a result of the present global economic crisis. Countries, communities and companies are being forced to review their assumptions about the future and to rethink their strategies in light of the global transformation taking place. An early conclusion is that complexity and interdependency are not only characteristics of globalization but are also at the root of a systemic crisis. Therefore, future solutions will need to be developed in a holistic and interdisciplinary way to ensure that the concerns of all stakeholders are addressed and a broad-based backlash is avoided. The imperative going forward will be to «connect the dots» to understand the relationship between issues, interests and institutions in order to catalyse solutions for the long term.
Purpose
There is a unique opportunity at the beginning of 2009 for leaders from industry, government and civil society to shape this transformation at an early stage for the benefit of all stakeholders. And to this end, the Annual Meeting 2009 will be organized under the theme «Shaping the Post-Crisis World» with the objective to catalyse a holistic and systematic approach to improve the state of the world in a manner that integrates all stakeholders of global society. An important preparatory conference will convene the most comprehensive network of experts in the world in Dubai in November. Over 700 members of 69 Global Agenda Councils will meet to advance solutions to the most critical challenges facing humanity. Their insights and recommendations will help catalyse solutions for the manifold challenges we face in 2009. The Annual Meeting theme «Shaping the Post-Crisis World» will be explored through six programmatic tracks:
– Promoting Stability in the Financial System and Reviving Global Economic Growth
– Ensuring Effective Global, Regional and National Governance for the Long Term
– Addressing the Challenges of Sustainability and Development
– Shaping the Values and Leadership Principles for a Post-Crisis World
– Catalysing the Next Wave of Growth through Innovation, Science and Technology
– Understanding the Implications on Industry Business Models
The confirmation of the most relevant decision-makers from government, business and civil society reflects the growing need for an interdisciplinary and systematic view of the major economic, political, societal and technological changes that lie ahead in 2009. (wef/mc/ps)
